SURVIVOR!
2015/16
THE ARCHITECTURE OF TRADITION

In line with the course theme for the year, heritage and urban regeneration, this studio is called SURVIVOR! Over the course of the year we will address the notions of SURVIVAL AND REVIVAL of architecture and culture through the vehicles of tradition.
Your projects will develop in relation to the stories and sub-plots of the FOUND CONDITION, cultural heritage, traditions and past-times, celebration, integration, performativity and temporality in design - the street and the parade.

GETTING OFF THE GROUND
2014/15
THE ARCHITECTURE OF PLACEMENT

Traditionally cities are explored at ground level. Famous flâneurs covered thousands of miles on foot experiencing street life - but what if we weren’t resigned to exploring only the streets of a city? What if we could dance on the rooftops like Bert in Mary Poppins? What if we could make our own short cuts through buildings? All of a sudden our paths are not dictated, our vistas are not manipulated and our imaginations can be unleashed. We can finally get off the ground.

MIDDLEMAN
2013/14
THE ARCHITECTURE OF SEPARATION

Pedlars were bright, colourful, joyful and loud, they made up songs, chants and rhymes - in order to be noticed - in order to CATCH custom.  They moved, and they weaved, they mapped out the best stand points and the shortcuts, they had good relationships with the shops and the customers, they knew everyone’s names. The pedlar was the original distributor of the produce of the country -- the primitive middleman.

COL:LAB
2012/13
THE ARCHITECTURE OF COLLABORATION

Collaborative working is now bread-and-butter for designers; in a climate where diversification has become necessary, designers are finding comfort and inspiration from their talented counterparts. Out-sourcing is no longer seen as a weakness, but as a means to providing the best service possible. Collaboration can be measured by its dimensions of openness and governance. In these, the types of collaboration are open or closed, and flat or hierarchical.
