SCAN.IT AT TATE BRITAIN

SCAN.IT is an exhibition concept devised by design+production duo Magic+Mafia aka Gem Barton + Carly Jayne.

Magic+Mafia were commissioned by the Tate Britain to bring the SCAN.IT concept to the BP sponsored ‘Tiny Tate’ event held on Sat 3rd Nov 2012.

As a lecturer in design+architecture Gem Barton designed the structure to house the exhibition output as well as the workshop facilities. The structure affectionately known as ‘the shed’ was built in Brighton by Magic+Mafia and transported to Tate Britain in it’s component parts where it was then assembled in the Duveen gallery.

The ‘beach hut’ inspired design is a simple with familiar domestic proportions intended to engage with children, providing a comfortable environment for them to create their own artwork. Over 2000 families attended the free ‘Tiny Tate’ event and SCAN.IT was exceedingly well received both by the children and the parents. Designed to accommodate children under 5, the SCAN.IT experience encouraged children to select objects of interest and scan them using a household scanner to create abstract images. During this 1 to 1 interaction with the Magic+Mafia team the children were taught about the different techniques.

Many families took the opportunity to create their very own unique family portraits. All children were gifted a high quality print out of their piece of art created at the Tate Britain, some pieces were also selected to generate an ever changing exhibition within the ‘shed’ itself.
