"Diversification is the mother of all....." - I dare not finish this statement.

A cocktail of stubbornness, redundancy, ego and relish has lead me to follow a diverse career path. I fill my days with teaching, curating, designing and writing, and while to most this may seem like a disparate concoction, to me, they are one and the same.

I teach architecture and interiors.
I design and build exhibitions, furniture, lighting and buildings.
I curate events, produce workshops and exhibitions.
I write about design, architecture and sustainable living.
I am a judge for competitions about our cities and the way we live.
I am part of a handful of collectives that challenge the way 'design' is perceived in the modern day.

It is a question of communication, that is all. What is the best way to convey the message? There are some topics that can only be truly be discovered by jumping in with both feet and cutting off the oxygen supply. That is how I feel about architecture - it is the passion that drives us. Without it, we are nothing.

The age old phrase "jack of all trades - master of none" is simply bullshit. But let's face it, it's not easy; spreading your time, keeping 'everybody' happy AND fulfilling your dreams. We don't want sympathy, we know we have brought it on ourselves. We can't always come to the pub on a Sunday because we're filling out a funding application, and we might miss the odd dinner party because we are 'networking' - we might even pretend that we feel hard done by because of this commitment. But we don't.

I want to hear from people who have fingers in pies, who are masters of everything, who relish a change and a challenge. I am part of a design + production duo called magic+mafia and we are always on the look out for people with weird and wonderful combinations of skills.

yes, we bring it on ourselves. I decided some time ago to start saying 'yes' as much as possible, just as an experiment to see where it would take me...

so currently:

I am an architect, running my own business
I am a part time stay at home dad, helping to raise my young daughter
I am a musician, playing in bands for fun and beer
I am teaching young whipper-snappers how to play bass guitar with another business
I am the chair of a local forum of Creative Industries type businesses (networking)
I am vice-chair of our city's business panel (networking networking networking)
I am serving on the board of a fantastic C.I.C. encouraging and supporting creative culture in our city www.creativestirling.org/

and.... my diary is full so no more, thanks.

the thing is, I don't believe in "jack of all trades - master of none", everything I do informs something else, sparks creative ideas, pushes me out of my comfort zone and makes me work harder. I can sleep when i'm dead ;)
